A good treasure hunt needs a good treasure map. And making treasure maps for kids can be just as much fun as the pirate trasure hunt itself. You can show your kids how to make their own kids treasure maps or even pirate party invitations using the ideas below.
Our Pirate Party treasure hunt game has 4 printable pirate treasure maps for you to use to create your own awesome pirate treasure maps to print.
Here are some ideas on how to make treasure maps for kids:
Print out the map you want to use and age the map using the following “aging techniques”
1. Coffee age your kids treasure map
Make a weak solution of coffee and use cotton balls to dab the liquid onto the printed treasure mape
Allow it to dry
Add a few more “layers” of coffee if necessary
2. Teabag aged kids treasure map:
You need a few semi dry teabags for this.
Print out one of the blank printable treasure maps from the pirate party planner program
Place the semi dry tea bags on the maps and allow the tea to leech into the maps
Dry the maps for use
This gives a nice mottled “aged effect to your pirate treasure map
3. Cooking oil and brown paper bag kids treasure map:
Print the map you want to use and use paper glue to glue it to brown paper – you can use a paper bag cut in half
Scrunch up the map really well to create a crinkled map
Use small amounts of cooking oil to rub into your printable pirate treasure map
Allow the maps to dry
This creates a brown parchment type effect for your pirate treasure maps
4. Burnt edges for your kids treasure map:
Use a candle to bun the edges – DO NOT burn the edges of a cooking oil map – it creates a fire torch – trust me – I did this one and its not a good idea
Do not allow children to do this one alone – or at all depending on the childs age.
5. Create an invisible ink pirate treasure map
Print out the white printable treasure map from the program
Use lemon juice to place an x marks the spot and other treasure map icons – like lines and numbers for clues
When your pirates are ready – use a heat source – a light bulb or candle and your invisible ink will appear on the page like magic!
